Fields of Battle Review

Fields of Battle is paintball for the most hardcore of iOS gamers. Intense gameplay, intuitive controls, and extensive content are what make this game great.

Fields of Battle is not just for paintball fans; it’s a game that appeals to all gamers that love the first-person shooter genre. Intense gameplay, intuitive controls, and extensive content make this a must-own app. However, there is a significant learning curve for the difficult controls. This is not a game for casual players, but is instead geared more toward hardcore shooter fans.
It should be noted that this is a freemium title that allows users to start playing for free, but includes in-app purchases that give players access to additional content. However, there is sufficient content available without the need to make any other purchases.
Fields_of_Battle_2
Players have several options when customizing their character. Gear may be purchased such as paintball guns, magazines, and air canisters. Furthermore, characters may be customized by changing helmets, outfits, and skin tone. After equipping the character, players may immediately jump into an online multiplayer game. Each game costs a certain amount of coins to enter, but players may earn back those coins later. There are more than 60 fields to do battle in, some real and some fantasy. Each field contains numerous buildings and obstacles so players can take cover. Also, one hit is enough to eliminate a player, causing a delayed respawn.
The controls are really what make this game unique. There are intuitive swipe gestures that allow players to slide into cover, duck, stand, and zoom in or out. Additionally, the device’s gyroscope is utilized to aim and lean left and right to shoot from behind cover. These controls are very difficult to get used to at first. However, once mastered, they start to feel very intuitive and give users very flexible movement and shooting options while playing the game.
Fields_of_Battle_3
Another great component to the app is the extensive customization options available. Players may customize every aspect of the controls, including sensitivity levels and the method used to shoot. Even the heads-up-display may be altered to suit the player’s personal preferences. Every component of the HUD may be moved literally anywhere on the screen.
I have very little to complain about this game. There are a few glitches that I experienced while playing the game, such as characters being caught between walls of structures. However, those instances rarely occurred. The app really does offer a solid paintball experience, and is absolutely a top-notch FPS.

Best Park In the Universe – Regular Show Review

Regular Show: Best Park in the Universe is a beat ‘em up in the tradition of the cartoon show’s 80s and 90s aesthetic. Unfortunately, the game comes with a few issues.

Mordecai and Rigby try to improve the park they live and work at while their boss Benson is away, so when a stranger from space offers to make it the best park in the universe, they take him up on his offer. Unfortunately, this fellow is a bit evil, sending the park into space. So Mordecai and Rigby must try to prove a technicality, that they don’t actually run the park and thus this villainous fellow actually had no right to yank it out of the ground and send it into space. This involves beating up lots of random foes. Yes, this is the first beat ‘em up about a legal technicality.
Best_Park_In_the_Universe_2
The game surprisingly apes Castle Crashers by featuring a level-up system with rudimentary ability tree, where points can be spent on new abilities. It adds a surprising level of depth to a game that could have just easily been a mindless beat ‘em up. The controls work surprisingly well, with tapping to move to a specific spot, and swipes to attack in a certain direction, or to unleash special attacks.
The problem with the level-up system starts with the fact that players can switch between Mordecai and Rigby, who each have their own experience bars. See, it’s just that it’s a waste of time to level up the other character. Characters gain so much damage upon leveling up that it’s better to pick one’s preferred character and just go crazy with them. Oh, and the fact that the combo attacks do so much damage from the second attack onward is just absurd.
Best_Park_In_the_Universe_3
It becomes a game of singular focus – ironic for a game based on a show about absent-minded slackers – not just on one character, but on one enemy at a time. Or at least one group of enemies at a time, as multiple enemies can be hit at once with the basic attacks. Being backed into a corner isn’t the worst thing in the world.
While I appreciate trying to go with a bigger idea for one of these Cartoon Network games, and the theme totally fits, a lot of work still needs to be done to balance out the game. And I mean a lot of work.

Tetris Blitz Review

Tetris Blitz is a new version of the popular Tetris game where you race against the clock in a two-minute blitz to clear lines and rack up points.

There’s fun to be had in short bursts with Tetris Blitz, but it just feels way too engineered to be fun, rather than anything naturally-occurring.
Compatibility: Universal
Released: May 23, 2013
Price: FREE
Size: 38.9 MB
Language: Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish
Seller: Electronic Arts
Tetris_Blitz_1
To describe the state of Tetris Blitz, one only needs to listen to its music. It’s the classic Tetris theme, “Korobeiniki,” but vaguely dubstepped. There’s a good idea here, but someone was intentionally trying to be popular. It is kinda cool, sort-of, but the inauthenticity can grate.
The gameplay is pretty much what it says on the tin – it’s the classic Tetris gameplay of making lines with tetrominoes, except now in two-minute bursts. There are powerups that can be bought with coins and used to enable powerup blocks that have actions like pulling all blocks to the left, or triggering avalanches. There’s also a weekly powerup that cycles every week, and it can be bought permanently with an in-app purchase.
Tetris_Blitz_2
For the fast-paced Blitz-style gameplay, the instant drop control scheme where players can just tap on a spot to drop a block works very well here. It’s easy to drag the block to the exact desired spot or to just tap the ‘cycle’ button on the left to get new locations. For a game that requires quick thinking, it’s a perfect fit.
And really, the Blitz-style actually fits Tetris Blitz well. Increasing the multiplier is done by getting Tetrises(clearing four lines at once), which presents a balance between specifically trying to get Tetrises to increase the multiplier, and making normal matches for points, which also triggers Frenzy mode. This mode has blocks cascading down to earn more points as more matches are made, but it also makes getting Tetrises more difficult. The balance here, plus the quick sessions, makes for an addictive game. Facebook login provides cloud syncing for saving, which is a minor miracle.
Tetris_Blitz_3
Yet, the problem is that it just feels so inauthentic. Like, it feels like someone decided to apply the “Blitz” formula to the game because it could make money, rather than as a natural extension of it. All the coins and cash-grabs make me feel at least a little bit cynical. At least it’s possible to permanently buy the powerup of the week and get unlimited use for $1.99, at least while it is featured. Having it free forever would be nice, but hey – this is EA we’re talking about.
So, while Tetris Blitz is without a doubt a fun game, that overwhelming sense that it’s a corporate creation restrains me from loving it completely. There are a lot of great ideas here, though.

Fire and Forget: The Final Assault Review

Fire and Forest: The Final Assault is a new shooting game where you pilot a flying tank blasting enemies in your way while avoiding all the obstacles.

Just once I’d like to see a post-apocalyptic world where people are able to rebuild society without the threat of mutants, zombies, raiders, wackos, or any other form of nasty stuff. I mean come on, hasn’t humanity endured enough by that point? Of course such a concept would probably make for a fairly uninteresting game, so until someone finds a way we have  Fire and Forest: The Final Assault  to slake our road warrior blood lust.

A lone hero has been called back into action after preventing an attack aimed at the International Congress of Peace. Now he’s got to hop into his Thunder Master III and put a stop to a mad general’s plans, or die trying. It’s kind of like the Playstation 2 release of Spy Hunter. Players must steer their Thunder Master III down an assortment of treacherous highways as they pursue their target; darting between barricades, blasting rivals with lasers or missiles, and even converting to hover mode to glide harmlessly over mines and shoot down bombers. This isn’t an “endless” game, however. Each level has a definitive path to follow and hazards to avoid, complete with boss fight at the end, while the Thunder Master III can take a fair amount of punishment before getting blown to bits. That’s not to say it’s invincible, but it can take a licking as well as repair itself by driving through health power-ups.
Fire_Forget_The_Final_Assault_2
Fire and Forget uses a pretty impressive combination of horizontal and vertical level design, but what really makes it so cool is the fact that it’s up to the player to decide when and where to take to the skies or the ground. They can use their hover jets in quick bursts to “jump” over obstacles, steer around them, blast through them, or simply spend most of their time in the air. Completing levels also earns medals (and completing them with enough points earns more), which unlock new car parts and paint colors that can be equipped as soon as they’re available.
I’ve never been a big fan of tilt-to-steer controls, and Fire and Forget‘s are no exception. They’re manageable, but even after adjusting the sensitivity they just didn’t click with me. They can also lead to trouble when transitioning between ground and air modes as the vertical tilt controls kick in as soon as the Thunder Master III is airborne, usually resulting in some frantic tilting in order to reorient the deathmobile.
Despite the occasional control problems Fire and Forget can still be plenty of hectic arcade fun. Being able to shift between the air and ground at a moment’s notice gives players the opportunity to approach each level in a variety of ways, and there are quite a few Thunder Master upgrades to chase after. Simply put: it’s fun and gives players good reason to stick with it.
